Mrs. Fargo’s Behavior Plan

I have several different ways I encourage good behavior.  On an individual level, I have color strips.  Each student has his or her own pocket on my bulletin board.  They receive 1 warning about their behavior.  The next time the same behavior occurs that day, they must put the appropriate color strip into their pocket.  At the end of the day, they fill out their behavior chart with any color strips they received.  At the end of the week, students who have 0 color strips for the week will receive a treat from the treasure box.  At the end of the month, the students with 0 color strips for the whole month get a free homework pass.  I also choose a student of the week.  An award will be given weekly to a student with outstanding behavior for that whole week.

I also monitor behavior on the small group level.  I have 6 groups (tables) in my classroom.  Each group has a spot on my board where they can receive points for the best behavior.  The points accumulate all week.  On Friday, the group with the most points receives a candy treat.  The next week, we begin again.

Lastly, I have a whole class behavior monitoring system.  This involves small reward parties or other special treats.  The class works together to spell out whatever treat they are working towards (ie: popcorn).  Once they spell the word, we have the party/treat.

The lunchroom also has a school-wide behavior management plan.  It uses the 3 cup system – blue is good, yellow is a warning (1 time asked to stop doing something), and red is not good (more than 1 time asked to stop doing something).  This system is for the whole class.  If the class receives a blue cup, they get free time outside (weather permitting).  If they get a yellow cup, they lose free time for that day, and according to cafeteria rules, sit the next day boy-girl-boy-girl.  If they get a red cup, they lose free time for a week, and according to cafeteria rules, sit the next day in silent lunch. After the 3rd red cup, I will assign permanent assigned seats in the cafeteria. If weather does not permit, we play a game indoors.
